Reading Is Fundamental

Reading is Fundamental (RIF)- is an effort of Community Initiatives for Children(CIC) to enhance a child's education, imagination, and creativity through three family book events each year.  These events are offered to all families enrolled in the CIC-LIFE program and the public from nearby neighborhoods.

The events, offered fall, winter and spring, include storytelling, snacks, reading activities and the opportunity for children to select a book of their own to take home.  These books are new and free of charge.  The books are geared to the interest of children age one to twelve.

Families are also engaged in an annual RIF Reading Challenge during which parents and other family members read to each child for 15 minutes twice a day for two weeks.

“The greatest gift is a passion for reading.”  - Elizabeth Hardwick
